The DECO₂ process is based on an advanced, intensified reactor that enables highly efficient capture of carbon dioxide (CO₂) through its chemical reaction with alkaline solutions, achieving capture efficiencies above 99% in a reactor volume one order of magnitude smaller than that of conventional technologies such as absorption columns. Owing to a design that maximizes gas–liquid mass transfer and precise control of operating conditions, the process allows not only CO₂ capture but also the selective production of a wide range of carbonates and bicarbonates, using hydroxides or carbonates as feedstocks, thereby converting CO₂ into a valuable chemical resource within a compact and scalable system.

Applications

The DECO₂ prototype has practical applications in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and CO₂ valorization across multiple industrial sectors. Its compact, high-efficiency (>99%) reactor design enables deployment where space, energy efficiency, and modularity are critical, such as industrial point sources of CO₂ (e.g., cement, chemicals, waste-to-energy, and biogas upgrading). In addition to direct CO₂ capture, the technology can be applied to the production of commercially valuable carbonates and bicarbonates using hydroxides or carbonates as feedstocks, supporting carbon utilization pathways in industries such as chemicals, construction materials, food, and pharmaceuticals. The small footprint and scalability of DECO₂ make it suitable for distributed, modular installations, pilot-to-industrial scale-up, and integration into existing processes as a low-impact retrofit solution.
