We present a next-generation hydrogen sensor based on functionalized graphene, designed to enhance sensitivity and selectivity toward hydrogen gas.

The prototype integrates the sensing material with gold electrodes, together with an electronic amplification system required to detect very subtle changes in the electrical resistance of the material.

Our technology is based on next-generation sensors fabricated using dichalcogenides and functionalized graphene, capable of detecting hydrogen rapidly, selectively, and with high sensitivity, overcoming the limitations of conventional sensors. The devices operate over a wide temperature range from 0 to 200 °C, with low power consumption, humidity resistance, low cost, and strong potential for industrial scalability, contributing to a safer and more sustainable deployment of hydrogen.

Applications

The prototype is designed for the detection of hydrogen leaks in real time, with direct applications in industrial safety and energy infrastructure. It can be used to monitor hydrogen production, storage, and distribution systems, such as electrolyzers, pipelines, storage tanks, and refueling stations.

Thanks to its high sensitivity, fast response, and low power consumption, the sensor is especially suitable for early leak detection, helping to prevent accidents in environments where hydrogen is used or handled. In its future autonomous version, with integrated electronics and display, the device could be deployed as a compact, standalone safety sensor for industrial facilities, laboratories, and emerging hydrogen-based energy systems.
