The adoption, research and development of disruptive electrochemical technologies and solutions in energy storage is a challenge in which Repsol is currently involved. Recognising the need to overcome the limitations of traditional lithium batteries, it seeks to move towards electrochemical energy storage beyond these technologies to meet the demands associated with intermittent energy generation.

In this sense, Repsol is exploring potential lines that include disruptive technologies for electrochemical energy storage based on innovative electrochemical approaches. This involves researching and developing new techniques and methodologies that allow for greater efficiency, storage capacity and durability compared to conventional lithium batteries. These technologies can be based on novel electrochemical reactions and use materials and components designed on the basis of fundamental knowledge and advanced modelling.

In addition, Repsol also focuses on the development of innovative energy storage applications based on the control and management of the integration of storage into the electricity grid. This involves the design of intelligent systems that enable optimal and efficient use of stored energy, as well as its proper integration into the existing electricity infrastructure. These innovative solutions aim to improve grid reliability and stability, while enabling greater penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources.
