Technological solutions for increasing the employee’s safety in construction and maintenance activities of power critical infrastructures

Challenge:

The energy transition requires from development of critical infrastructuresto transmit and integrate renewable power from generation to consumptionlocations. Examples of these critical infrastructures are overhead and underground/submarine transmission power lines and power substations including transformers and multiple equipment and control systems.

Redeia and its company Red Electrica is responsible to design, constructand maintain these assets for the high voltage transmission system in Spain https://www.ree.es/en/activities/grid-manager-and-transmission-agent. The constructionand maintenance of these critical infrastructures demands execution of worksthat represent a risk for workers. Some examples of such risks are:

- Works at height for construction and maintenance ofoverhead power transmission lines.
-  Lifting operations of pylons and other components inoverhead lines and subestations.
-  Maintenance operations in substations in presence ofhigh voltage electrical risk  in thesurroundings.
-  Health problems that may be derived from some regularworks such as heavy equipment layout.

Target:

Redeia wants to progress towards zeros accidents in their activities.The target of this challenge is to identify new technical and technological solutions that contribute to increase the safety of the employees in all their activities developed in the deployment and maintenance of critical infrastructures for high voltage power transmission system.
