Technology Alternatives for Cotton Textile Waste Valorization

Problem

The textile industry is facing increasing regulatory and societal pressure to reduce the amount of textile waste sent to landfill and to improve circularity through reuse and recycling solutions. Among textile waste streams, cotton represents one of the largest fractions, both in terms of volume and valorization potential.

The objective of this challenge is to identify, evaluate, and map innovative technologies that enable the material valorization of cotton textile waste, including both post-industrial and post-consumer streams. The focus is on maximizing cellulose value recovery while enabling the production of new products, materials, or secondary raw materials.

Opportunity

The textile industry is transitioning towards circular economy models, driven by emerging regulations that increasingly hold manufacturers and distributors responsible for managing textile waste at the end of a product’s life cycle. This trend is creating growing demand for valorization solutions capable of diverting textile waste from landfill and incineration.

In Spain, a significant share of textile waste is composed of cotton fibers, accounting for approximately 30–40% of total textile waste generated. Internal studies conducted to date have identified that polyester recycling and valorization pathways are already being actively explored by numerous industry players, whereas opportunities related to cotton waste valorization remain comparatively less developed.

Currently, the most widespread solutions focus on low-value applications such as recycled fibers, fillers, insulation materials, and absorbent products. However, there is increasing interest in identifying new valorization routes capable of generating higher-value products, including chemical feedstocks, advanced materials, bioproducts, and intermediate products that can be integrated into circular value chains. These solutions should be able to compete with more established recovery pathways, such as energy valorization.

We are looking for innovative technologies and business models focused primarily on the material valorization of cotton-rich textile waste.

Particular interest will be given to solutions that:

• Recover and upgrade cellulose into higher-value products.
• Produce chemical feedstocks, advanced materials, bioproducts, or circular intermediates.
• Demonstrate a certain level of technological maturity and industrial scalability.
• Deliver strong energy-efficiency performance.
• Have the potential to be integrated into existing refinery and petrochemical complexes.
• Enable the development of economically viable circular value chains for cotton textile waste
