This invention relates to an airborne system and method for the characterization and measurement of radiating systems or antennas, comprising: an aerial module including a unit for measuring electromagnetic emissions, which captures the electromagnetic field radiated by the radiating system or antenna, and a positioning and guiding system with an accuracy equal to or less than 3 cm; and a ground station including a processing unit for the electromagnetic emission measurements, which processes the measurements using a set of algorithms.
The invention also relates to a method for measuring and characterising radiating systems or antennas.
This invention is suitable for sectors that require antennas to be characterised and measured, such as radar and radio navigation facilities, terrestrial and satellite-based telecommunications systems, or terrestrial broadcasting facilities. Granted and validated in France and Germany.

Applications

The main advantages respect to other current technologies are:
- Regarding SSR antenna diagnostics: antenna operators do not need to stop operations to have their SSR systems diagnosed.
- Regarding BTS antenna diagnostics: significant cost reduction compared to traditional methods.
- Regarding 5G antenna diagnostics: ability to assess the performance of complex antennas, such as multibeam antennas, used in 5G deployment.
- Regarding primary radar diagnostics:
allows the diagnostic task to be executed while the antenna under analysis (AUT) continues its operations;
it reduces the effects of the operating primary radar on the accuracy of measurements and prevents damage to the equipment.

Comments

Our experience in active and passive tele-detection allows us to generate useful information for various applications including critical antenna diagnostics and BTS antenna diagnostics.

• SSR antenna diagnostics: obtaining radiation patterns.
• BTS antenna diagnostics: obtaining radiation pattern and BTS antenna performance diagnostics.
• Diagnosis of primary radars: obtaining radiation patterns, identifying potential faults and performing antenna calibration exclusively by means of near field (NF) measurements.
