Sustainable Development Goal:
Applications

It is a universal method, since microwave heating is effective regardless of the chemical nature of the plastic, and very economical, due to the fact that graphite is an abundant material in nature. Therefore, it is a method easily scalable and applicable at industrial level as pretreatment in any technology that uses microplastics. These processes can be applied with the final objective of eliminating plastics, transforming them into carbon dioxide and water, or chemically recycling plastics by converting them into compounds of interest such as short-chain acid hydrocarbons (malonic, acetic, oxalic and formic acid, among others).
