MICROSCOPE FOR NON-INVASIVE, REAL-TIME DIAGNOSIS OF DIABETES

It is a new technology that enables high-resolution phase and amplitude imaging of 3D microscopic samples in a non-fluorescent microscopy procedure. Based on the insertion of a millilens array at the top of the microscope aperture, the system provides quantitative amplitude and phase images of microscopic samples. With this architecture it is possible to compute, at different depths, high-resolution images of 3D samples with minimal variations for implementation. The potential of this technique as a diagnostic tool is due to its minimally invasive character, as only a small drop of capillary blood is needed, and to the fact that it can be performed at any time, obtaining the results almost in real time. It could also be used in the future to analyse diseases in which the refractive index and/or cell morphology is distorted.
Applications: This invention has direct application in any field that requires quantitative information from microscopic samples in a non-invasive way. - Its use in histology would be of particular interest as it does not require dye to observe the different structures that make up the sample. - Similarly, it would be possible to apply this device in metrology and in MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) studies. Advantages: The main advantages of this invention are: - It does not require staining of samples, so it can be analysed non-invasively in diagnostic units in a fast, mobile and accurate way. - Easy adaptation from a conventional microscope. - High resolution including microscopic samples.
