METHOD FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS

The present invention belongs to the field of medicine, specifically to the field of diagnosis of ulcerative colitis in a subject with the use of an oligonucleotide probe. The inventors have discovered that a particular Bacteroidetes-associated genotype is present in the gut microbiota of subjects suffering from ulcerative colitis but not in healthy subjects, thus allowing to use the detection of said genotype as an early diagnostic tool. The inventors have also developed a probe for the detection of said genotype.
The invention provides a new diagnostic tool for suspected ulcerative colitis. Its implementation in clinical practice would reduce the time to reach the diagnosis. Currently, there isn't a biochemical or genetic marker at the intestinal microbiota level used in routine clinical practice.
