COLORIMETRIC DETECTOR
WO21043982
The present invention is related to the detection of formaldehyde concentrations in the air by using a coordination polymer, which comprises repeating coordination complexes with an octahedral geometry, wherein said coordination complex comprises iron (II), at least one ligand comprising an amino moiety; wherein the coordination polymer further comprises counter-ions; for the identification and/or quantification of formaldehyde.

The following compound readily reacts with formaldehyde giving rise to a colour change. It can be easily implemented in different ways (paintings, films, etc.), thus, leading to a simple, inexpensive, hand-handle and easy-to-use colorimetric device for both detecting and quantifying formaldehyde present in air, liquid and/or solid matrices, irrespective of temperature. A potential application are labels for food smart packaging or quality control in bricolage industry, to certfy formaldehyde free emission materials
Formaldehyde, a widely used compound in household materials and industrial processes, has been classified as a human carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO) and identified as a major cause of sick building syndrome (SBS). After this patent, PMMA films can be easily prepared at low-cost, that are suitable for several labelling applications. No toxic neither harmful products are used nor liberated during the transducing and sensoring processes. It reacts in a wide temperature range, including room temperature (-40 ºC-20 ºC)being stable above 150 ºC. Not only allows naked-eye identification of formaldehyde but also a colour coded concentration map can be generated, thus, making the determination of formaldehyde a one-glimpse process. Furthermore, the occurring chemical reaction is irreversible, and so is the colour change, thereby, assay results cannot be manipulated.
