The invention is a method and sensor programmed to detect refrigerant leakages in heat pumps or air conditioning (AC). The dependence of the main working parameters of the heat pump has been analyzed, and subcooling has been determined as critical parameter in a wide spectrum of air temperatures. The existence of a correlation among subcooling, cold and hot source temperature, and revolutions per minute in the compressor has been confirmed. The sensor of the invention applies the previous method either using the own sensor or reading from the PLC.
