CSIC and the University of Alcala have developed a novel photocatalytic coating with biocide effect. The material is a nanocomposite that can be applied in different surfaces and is able to reduce the bacterial adhesion in dark conditions and shows a high photocatalytic inactivation of viruses and bacteria after being irradiated, preventing the spread and transmission of pathogens.

Applications

-The material can be used as a coating for different surfaces: metals, ceramics, textiles, work surfaces, instruments, swimming pools, etc. -The composite is very stable, easy to synthetize and low cost. -The material shows low toxicity, being biocompatible in contact with the skin. -The coating is stable and resistant to abrasion and washing without losing its activity or releasing material.
