We have developed an optical technology based on smart colorimetric detection membranes, which has enabled us to create two state-of-the-art portable optical devices for quality control in the agri-food sector (specifically in the olive oil and wine sectors):

  1. Portable optical device for the in-situ determination of volatile acidity in liquid samples (wine and brandy). This device consists of two modules: i) Microdistillation module. It allows small volumes (4 ml) of sample (wine or brandy) to be distilled without the need for an electrical connection or refrigerant. ii) Optical module. It allows the total acidity of the distilled wine/brandy sample to be quantified in a simple, fast, economical, and environmentally friendly way.

  1. Portable optical device for quantifying the total concentration of two of the most important biophenols present in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO): oleocanthal (OC) and oleacein (OLA). This device allows for the in-situ quantification (at the point of production: oil mill, olive grove, packaging plant) of OC and OLA directly in EVOO, in a selective, simple, fast (5 minutes per sample), economical, and environmentally friendly way. The device consists of two modules: i) Reaction module for the analysis of up to twenty consecutive samples, ii) Optical quantification module.

Applications

The prototype has two practical applications:

  1. Simple, fast, economical, and environmentally friendly in situ determination of volatile acidity in liquid samples (wine and brandy).

  1. In situ quantification of the concentration of the phenolic compounds oleocanthal (OC) and oleacein (OLA) directly in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in a selective, simple, fast, economical, and environmentally friendly manner.
