The present invention relates to novel water-soluble BODIPY dyes by means of simple boron functionalisation. The known hydrophobicity of BODIPYs and most common analogues thereof represente an important limitation to its optimal use in some applications that require water solubility, meaning that it is of interest to obtain BODIPYs that are soluble in water or in highly hy- drophilic media from conventional precursor BODIPYs. The invention relates to the structural design, synthetic access and water sol ubility of a novel group of hydrophilic molecular dyes belonging to the BODIPY family, which are advantageous due to the generality and ease of obtainment thereof from conventional BODIPY dyes (F-BODIPY -based), said production entailing the minimal disturbance of the photophysical properties of the starting dye, as well as a significant Chemical and photophysical robustness, which implies the potential use thereof in photonic, physical and Chemical applications in aqueous or highly hydrophilic media.
