SUBALI – Submarine LiFi system for high-speed optical communications in port environments.

SUBALI is an experimental proof of concept based on LiFi (Light Fidelity) technology for high-speed wireless data transmission in underwater environments, with a special focus on port areas. The system integrates commercial LiFi hardware adapted to the blue/green band, together with its own experimental developments, and has been validated by laboratory and pool tests (up to 12 m) under different levels of turbidity. The experimental results demonstrate the technical feasibility of submarine optical communication as an alternative to traditional acoustic systems, reaching transmission speeds of up to 150 Mbps, sufficient for applications such as real-time video and underwater inspection.

The prototype is aimed at improving submarine connectivity in scenarios where acoustic communications present limitations, especially in port environments. Practical applications include:
- Inspection and maintenance of submarine infrastructure: Employ LiFi communication systems to transmit data from AUVs and ROVs used in inspections and maintenance of submarine infrastructures such as oil pipelines, submarine cables, and offshore platform structures.
- Environmental monitoring in coastal areas: Use LiFi to transmit data from underwater environmental sensors in real time, allowing continuous monitoring of water quality, temperature and other environmental parameters in critical coastal areas.
- Special Operations and Diving: Equip special operations units and military divers with LiFi devices for transmitting critical data, such as real-time imagery and location coordinates in underwater tactical missions.
